This month’s BIG WORLD Book Club pick is Soccer Star written by Mina Javaherbin and illustrated by Renato Alarcão. This upbeat book follows Paolo, a young Brazilian boy who dreams of becoming a soccer star. We see him go about his day–walking his little sister Maria to school, chatting with friends, fishing to earn money, and finally playing an evening soccer match with friends. But when Paolo’s teammate Jose hurts his wrist, the team is short one player. The all-boy team has to decide whether to let Maria (a girl!) join their game.
